Elementary School Summer Reading Lists

“Read What You Love!”

- Dog Man (a.k.a Dav Pilkey)

Dear Parents,

Summer Reading is here!  Summer break is an important time for everyone: a time to rest, reflect and renew ourselves after a long and busy school year.  Summer reading is especially important for our children because we want them to maintain the valuable skills they learned in the previous year.  Students who do not read during the summer months often return to school having lost much of the progress they accomplished the year before.

However, Summer Reading should be fun and exciting as well.  It is an opportunity for our children to delve deeper into their favorite subjects (horses, baseball, fantasy…) or to branch off in new, unexplored places (Africa, science fiction, knights and castles…).   During the school year, my first priority is always to connect our children with a book they will fall in love with. When children read books they love, they will be motivated to read by choice and will be on the path to becoming lifelong readers.   This should not change during the summer months. The Holy Spirit Faculty is providing summer reading lists to help guide our children toward excellent books. Please find the reading lists for each grade attached below.

We are also providing support in tracking your child’s reading progress with two options:  the Reading Scavenger Map, and online access to the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.  You may use either the map, the online reading program, or both as you wish.    Your child will need to log in with the username and password that has already been created for them.  Email Mrs. Brake to receive your child’s username and password.

Also, if you ever need additional book suggestions for your child, please do not hesitate to email me – I will continue to be their librarian during the summer!  Additional booklists are always available at   (click on the “list” tab).

p.s. The Tuscaloosa Public Library has a great Summer Reading Program planned for this summer: “Libraries Rock”!
